I can still remember that day like it was yesterday. I was around eight years old, fishing with our neighbor from across the street who owned a 17-foot Mako that seemed indestructible. Every once in a while, he would take us out, and on this particular morning we were fishing near the power plant by Weedon Island back in the mid-1980s — before the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission existed, when it was still the Florida Marine Patrol.

The fishing was incredible. We had a cooler full of fish, smiles on our faces, and the feeling that nothing in the world could top that day. As a kid, it felt like we had accomplished something legendary.

Then the Florida Marine Patrol pulled alongside us.

At the time, redfish regulations were just beginning to be enforced more heavily, and we had a few undersized reds in the cooler. After boarding the boat, the officers took our neighbor away for what felt like forever to an eight-year-old kid. When they finally returned, we had to hand over every fish we caught that day. The only reason our neighbor avoided going to jail was because the officer took pity on the situation after hearing it was my first time ever catching redfish.

That experience stayed with me for life.

From that day forward, I made myself a promise: never keep a fish out of regulation again. Not one. To this day, I have honored that promise without exception. Ironically, I sometimes joke that I was cursed that morning, because I have never caught another redfish since. Many many snook, trout, flounder, everything....Except Redfish.

But looking back now, the lesson was bigger than the fish. It taught me respect — respect for conservation, for the law, and for protecting the fisheries so future generations could experience the same excitement and memories that shaped my childhood on the Florida waters.
